From now until July 27, Galleria Dallas is hosting an art exhibit featuring the work of Dallas-based painter Devon Deshaun in honor of Juneteenth.
The exhibit is titled Freedom and “honors the vibrant spirit of individuality and the boundless possibilities that unfold when we embrace who we are,” according to Deshaun’s website. Pieces will include “Lovebirds” and “Sunflower,” which show Deshaun’s portrayal of cultural pride.
Deshaun was born and raised in Waco, where his career as a self-taught artist began. He earned a scholarship to the Art Institute of Dallas and has formed a unique style of painting called Pebbled Melanin, which is a take on stippling or pointillism. His art was also used in a community campaign for the City of Waco.
The shopping center also commissioned a T-shirt design that will be available at the Galleria Dallas free of purchase on Saturday, June 13, while supplies last. Deshaun will be on-site for a meet and greet and to distribute T-shirts at 11 a.m.
“My art aims to represent the people of my culture through moments of feeling and new narratives,” Deshaun said in the press release. “This Juneteenth T-shirt design features my Pebbled Melanin technique in a way that celebrates joy and freedom.”
Freedom will be on display at the art window on level one near The Westin.
“Devon Deshaun’s T-shirt design serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit,” Galleria Dallas Director of Marketing Audrey Miranda said in the press release. “Galleria Dallas is committed to engaging the community through local partnerships that celebrate art, artists and the discussions their work can initiate.”
