The inaugural Deep Vellum Music & Literature Festival will host its Festival Kick-Off Night at the bar and restaurant Ruins on Friday, July 10.
The evening will celebrate Latin American translation with a panel and Latin music, followed by performances by Nicaraguan singer-songwriter Ceci Ceci and Cumbia band Cayuga All-Stars, both based in Dallas.
Running until Sunday, the festival will bring together both local and international artists to Deep Ellum’s streets and shops for live music, readings of literature and other creative events. This is expected to offer a unique experience to anyone who happens to walk by one of the 12 venues, including stores like Poets Books and AllGood Cafe.
On all three days, dozens of poets, writers and musicians will perform, including the headliners: award-winning poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib and critically acclaimed musician and poet Jamila Woods, who will be at the Sons of Hermann Hall at 6 p.m. Saturday.
At 11 a.m. Sunday, poets and the Dallas jazz-and-poetry collective D-CLAIM will perform together in a concert that will conclude the festival.
All events are open to the public, except for the Friday night kick-off and the performances by Woods and Abdurraqib, which require attendees to purchase special passes.
Participants can purchase a $40 weekend pass that allows entry to all events the entire weekend, a $15 Friday+ Pass that includes Friday night’s kickoff and daytime programming throughout the weekend or a $30 Saturday+ pass that includes Saturday night’s headliner events and daytime programming. Daytime passes are also available for free with an RSVP, but they do not include the Friday kickoff or the Saturday headliner performance.
The festival aims to celebrate literature and live music as a single art form, blending the two and honoring the neighborhood’s rich musical history.
