Amor Y Queso on Main Street in Deep Ellum has closed after reopening to the public on June 1.
The Dallas Morning News reported the bodega/cheese shop shuttered on Monday, July 20 because of diminishing sales. After Sarah Carlock originally opened the business in Deep Ellum in December 2020, it was closed to the public in 2022 and only used as a catering prep kitchen. Then, Amor Y Queso reemerged amid the hype surrounding the World Cup with an expanded menu of snacks, sweets, pastries, coffees, matcha and sandwiches.
The most recent closure was announced in a July 22 eulogy-like Instagram post.
“This little blue shop of mine, the home base for countless cheesy adventures and innumerable side quests and journeys. A place where community came first, where friends could come do their cool shit alongside me, where my girls learned how to hustle and also what (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) guidelines are,” the post reads. “This tiendita held my soul in it. It taught me about the type of creative I was and am and will be. It hosted more champagne toasts than the rest of my life combined. It’s been a privilege to share my space with you all for the last six years.”
It’s unclear what will come of Amor Y Queso in the future. The post promised that this isn’t “goodbye.”
This news comes less than a week after sports bar and lounge KANVAS by Kevin Kelley closed — a block away from Amor Y Queso — citing concerns with safety in Deep Ellum. Amor Y Queso’s post also spared some words for the entertainment district.
“Deep Ellum has been one of my favorite hoods in Dallas for a long time,” the post reads. “I wish more was said about the businesses that exist there in the daytime instead of just horror stories of what happens after sunset. We have so much art and joy and magic there for anyone who walks the block. I encourage you all to go. Patronize the artisans and creatives that NEED you if they’re (going to) survive. Don’t let us lose the creative soul that is Deep Ellum.”
