Richardson-based Network of Community Ministries, also known as Network, is hoping to attract more volunteers for its Handyman Program, which helps senior neighbors with home and property maintenance.
Network serves all of the Richardson Independent School District (RISD) ZIP codes, including Lake Highlands, parts of North Dallas, Garland and Plano. The Handyman Program, which was created several years ago and recently revamped by Jane Kovacs, Network’s seniors’ net coordinator, is open to all seniors regardless of income.
“[Network] now has a robust program that serves the community every Tuesday and Thursday, but it is difficult to fill all the needs. Volunteers are greatly needed,” Lou Ann York of York Communications said.
The Handyman Program provides services such as yard work, painting and other property maintenance. Network also provides seniors with home food delivery, information and referrals, companion calls and a weekly Seniors Day every Thursday that is open to all seniors in the Network community.
The program currently has 10 volunteers and is specifically looking for people with plumbing and other home-maintenance skills. According to York, approximately 250 seniors were served through the program last year.
