The Save Dallas City Hall Coalition submitted a notice of intent to the Dallas City Secretary, kick-starting the petition drive to bring the future of City Hall to the May 2027 ballot.
The coalition is hoping to secure about 20,000 signatures from registered Dallas voters to add a city charter amendment where voters would determine if the City of Dallas must maintain principal municipal government operations at the current Dallas City Hall, which was designed by architect I.M. Pei.
The letter was filed Friday, Oct. 2, just over a week after the coalition announced the petition drive at City Hall Plaza.
Supporters of the coalition include former Dallas Mayor Laura Miller, Pei’s daughter Liane Pei, and current Dallas County Commissioner Elba Garcia. Garcia joined former Dallas City Council members Veletta Forsythe-Lill and Erik Wilson in delivering the notice Friday morning, along with other supporters and coalition members.
“People are tired of backroom deals and misplaced priorities,” said Chris Bowers, Save Dallas City Hall Coalition’s attorney, in a press release. “They want City Hall focused on the things that truly matter to their families and neighborhoods, like stronger police and fire services, safer parks, better roads, and a prosperous economy that creates opportunity across our city.”
The coalition said in a press release that petition-signing events will begin immediately throughout Dallas.
