The City of Dallas Department of Sanitation launched a new Alley-To-Curb Transition webpage to educate residents about upcoming changes to trash service.
The transition, which was proposed in early 2024, had previously adapted to a “hybrid approach” revealed in June 2025 after community members expressed concerns about the switch. The revised approach would have affected about 10% of all customers.
City officials launched a November 2025 survey mailing nearly 44,000 surveys. From over 10,000 responses, 93% respondents favored continuing alley collection, with 60% willing to pay some amount more to keep the service.
However, it’s not strictly about cost. Some alleys are too narrow for modern sanitation trucks that hold more capacity, and some alley surfaces with dirt, gravel or damaged pavement aren’t safe or efficient for pickup. Additionally, dead-end alleys present challenges for drivers to back out over long distances in the confined spaces.
Following the citywide review, approximately 6,000 homes (2% of customers) are moving to curbside services with the current plan, according to the website. This transition is effective starting Feb. 1, 2027, with no change to the current collection day.
For alley and curbside rates, Sanitation will propose a tiered monthly rate to the City Council as part of the City Manager’s recommended budget in August 2026 for the next fiscal year. Those details will be published on the transition webpage following the presentation of the proposal.
Most alleys will continue to receive sanitation services. For neighbors who cannot move carts due to disability and no one in the household who can help, free cart assistance is available from Sanitation. Enrollment is based on eligibility verification with required renewal.
To verify if your home is included, view the address lookup page. The blue markers on the map indicate the property as part of the transition. Prior to the switch, transitioning homes will also receive a written notice before new collection methods begin.
