Dallas City Council overturned a budget proposal that called for the defunding of more than 300 Flock cameras in the city. The council’s decision comes only a few days after the Dallas Police Department (DPD) announced more than half of the cameras would be shut off in the following weeks.
As a result of the State of Texas’ directive on grant funding used to support Flock Safety cameras, DPD announced that 321 of 684 cameras are no longer eligible for that money.
DPD will cancel those cameras effective Sept. 15.
During last night’s Wednesday briefing meeting, District 7 Council member Adam Bazaldua proposed a new amendment that would have stripped away $1.5 million in funding for DPD’s Flock camera system. The amendment would essentially eliminate the program.
However, the council strongly opposed, citing the Flock cameras help improve efficiency and solve crimes.
Only Mayor Pro Tem Jaime Resendez, District 9 Council member Paula Blackmon and Bazaldua voted to support the proposed amendment.
