Edgemere senior living community just launched the La Piazza memory care space in conjunction with Certus Living at The Plaza at Edgemere.
Including activity areas and rooms that cater directly to the needs of each resident, La Piazza rejects the idea that memory care can be solved using a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach.
“For those experiencing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we know that no two journeys – or even days – are alike,” said Certus Living’s Memory Care Program Director Angela Kotschi in the press release. “At La Piazza, your loved one will be cherished and respected for who they are. They’ll be nurtured, safe and comfortable, while retaining their dignity.”
La Piazza welcomes residents from across the cognitive spectrum, encouraging engagement between its active residents as they receive treatment. Kotschi notes that the friendships patients share unite them, alleviating judgement and isolation.

Community members have the autonomy to choose what activities they wish to participate in and on which social level. Depending on their mood, a resident could choose to complete a one-on-one sensory activity or work with a larger group.
“It’s not like there’s one set activity, and everybody’s forced to do it or sit alone,” Kotschi said. “Your loved one will be given options based on where they are, and with the understanding that that can change day-to-day or even hour-to-hour. Our prime concern is that everyone feels happy, interested and well.”
Edgemere also piloted several other memory-care initiatives last spring that have helped it thrive, including the Memory Café program, staff dementia-care training, a refurbished memory care foyer and courtyard, dementia support meetings, new dining spaces and more. The Atelier Sensory Room has been a key addition to the memory care facilities, a comfortable, sensorially calm space for residents to relax and talk with family.
“Families can struggle to find ways to interact with their loved ones in memory care,” Kotschi says. “The Atelier Sensory Room gives them activities they can actually do together.”
As they continue to innovate their spaces and expand their services, Edgemere will continue prioritizing holistic care and dedicate itself fully to each and every patient they serve.
