Goodwill store coming soon
Following a major renovation, Goodwill Industries of Dallas will take over the former Habitat for Humanity Re-Store and the former PL$ Check Cashing spaces at Skillman and Abrams. The new secondhand shop will open in September.
Earlier this week, Goodwill announced plans to convert a Plano Walgreen’s into its first small format store, according to Dallas Culture Map. The former pharmacy will open August 6 as a 10,000 square foot thrift store and donation center, with about 5,000 items per day expected to hit the sales floor. A massive new Goodwill opened in April near Broadway and I-30 in Garland, with about 30,000 square feet and 10,000 items added per day.

The Lake Highlands store is expected to fall somewhere in between, with more than 20,000 square feet. Shoppers may expect to find a rotating selection of gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, vintage items, furniture, books, toys, electronics and home goods.
According to ThredUp.com, which tracks trends in the resale industry, the global secondhand apparel market is projected to reach $393 billion by 2030 — and is growing twice as fast as the overall apparel market. Cost pressure is moving resale from optional to essential, they say, with 59% of consumers shopping for secondhand apparel in 2025 and 27% of shoppers saying they will increase their secondhand purchasing to offset further price increases.
Habitat for Humanity opened its Re-Store resale shop at 6500 Skillman in 2015. Before that, it was home to Big Lots.
