The Herrera Dance Project will present a Posthumous Echoes of Justice Award to Sylvia Collins on opening night of the third installment of the multidisciplinary dance-theater production Borders Within – The Silent Cry of a Dreamer.
Collins was a community activist and served as a Democratic precinct chair in Dallas County. She was one of three victims who passed away due to The Clyde apartment explosion in May.
The award recognizes her commitment to equality and the improvement of Dallas through her tireless advocacy for justice, dedication as precinct chair and her impactful presence at community events, according to a press release.
“Our mission at Herrera Dance Project is to celebrate the diverse community of Dallas by providing an inclusive space for artistic expression,” said Favian Herrera Jr., co-director of the Herrera Dance Project, in a press release. “With this production, we seek to amplify the voices of those who have been silenced and encourage our community to engage in the vital work of building a more compassionate society. Honoring Sylvia Collins with the Posthumous Echoes of Justice Award is our way of ensuring her legacy of service and love never fades.”
Echoes of Justice: Borders Within – The Silent Cry of a Dreamer follows the previous works addressing the murder of Santos Rodriguz and the Ulvade school tragedy. Specifically, the production focuses on the human toll of the unresolved DREAM Act and the intersection of systemic barriers and mental health stigma by honoring the stories of Joaquin Luna Jr., Jocelynn Rojo Carranza and Gabriella Aporicio Ortega, according to a press release.
The special tribute will take place on Wednesday, July 29 at the Latino Cultural Center. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m. Free tickets are available here for opening night and the second showing on Friday, July 31.
