My favorite part of the 1961 Disney classic One Hundred and One Dalmatians is the display of dogs who look like their owners.
The lanky beatnik-type and her long-legged dog. The short, curvy businesswoman and her pug. The upper-class lady dressed in frills that mimic her poodle’s fur. All walk at the same pace as their dogs. The animators did a great job of designing these pairs that definitely look like they do or did exist in the real world. Maybe birds of a feather really do flock together.
For our September pet issue, we asked people on Facebook if they look like their pets and if so, to send us a photo. But here’s the thing about print media — unlike online, space on the pages of our magazine is limited. Putting it together can be like a game of Tetris, except for the pieces are stories, photos and ads. Our skilled creative team works hard to make the magazine visually appealing, but sometimes, tough choices do have to be made. This little photo story was one of a few on the chopping block.
Most stories that are cut from one month’s magazine can fit into the next issue. But this one was specifically designated for September, so it will have to live online. Thank you to those who sent us your photos. Community participation is what makes a hyperlocal publication like ours strong.
