Popular restauranteur Fernando Barrera, founder and owner of Latin Deli and Josefina’s Cocina, died last month. He was 51.
Barrera was born in La Moncada, Guanajuato, and raised in Toluca, Mexico by a devoted single mom. He named his restaurant in Richardson to honor her.
“She raised her children with faith, discipline and love,” he wrote when the restaurant opened, “and taught them that nothing in life comes without effort…Her cooking brought the family together.”
Latin Deli became a fixture in Lake Highlands and Lakewood when it opened at the corner of Abrams and Northwest Highway in 2011. Their menu features breakfast, sandwiches, salads, sweets and a wide variety of smoothies, lemonades and juices.
“Fernando will always be remembered as a dedicated businessman who was constantly on the lookout for exciting new opportunities,” friends wrote in his obituary. “He could be stubborn and quick-tempered, but his heart was always in the right place, and he was committed to doing the very best for his family. He was a loving husband, father, uncle and friend who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Fernando was also a jokester who loved to make people laugh and had a special way of finding joy in the little things life brought his way.”
Barrera is survived by wife Andreea, daughters Michelle and Mia, and a host of other beloved friends and family. Services were held October 19.
Latin Deli is at 5844 Abrams Road.
