The filing period for the May Richardson ISD school board election opens next week.

The May 2 election presents RISD voters with the opportunity to cast ballots in races for two board seats, depending on where they live. Both Place 4 Trustee Regina Harris and Place 5 Trustee Rachel McGowan won reelection last May. Lake Highlands neighbor, Board President and At-Large Seat 6 Trustee Chris Poteet last won reelection in 2024, leaving the Place 6 At-Large seat, currently held by Eric Eager, the lone race neighbors will have to consider on the ballot. Eager recently told the Advocate he plans to run for reelection.
Single Member District 3 Trustee Debbie Renteria’s seat will also be up for grabs this spring, although Lake Highlands neighbors won’t be casting ballots in that race as they fall out of its geographic boundaries.
Interested residents can now fill out an online request form to receive an application packet. The filing period runs from Jan. 14 to 5 p.m. Feb. 13.
To be eligible to run, candidates must have been a resident of Richardson ISD (or their single member district) for a year before the filing deadline, a U.S. citizen, mentally competent by legal standards and not have a felony conviction.
RISD trustees previously ran exclusively for at-large seats. In 2019, a lawsuit filed by former Trustee David Tyson alleging voting rights violations forced the district to move to a single-member system.
