Twisted Root Burger Co.’s original location on Commerce Street in Deep Ellum has closed.
Reports from other outlets do not disclose why the closure occurred.
“As our original location, this restaurant will always hold a special place in our story,” reads Twisted Root’s statement to CultureMap. “We’re incredibly grateful to every guest, neighbor and team member who supported us along the way. Thank you for the memories and for being part of where Twisted Root began.”
Twisted Root opened in 2006 and has been credited with bringing the trend of gourmet burgers to local prominence.
“Gourmet burgers are everywhere right now, but when Twisted Root first opened, that was not a thing,” said Jon Hetzel of Madison Partners, which was once Twisted Root’s landlord, in an interview with the Lakewood/East Dallas Advocate last year for a story about Deep Ellum.
Being featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in 2009 also helped the concept’s rise to prominence. Since then, other locations have opened up elsewhere in Texas and beyond (anyone remember the SMU Boulevard spot?). Despite financial troubles, plenty still exist, particularly in DFW.
A few food and drink establishments have left Deep Ellum recently for various reasons. Businesses on Commerce Street have been dealing with the ongoing construction project to turn the street into a two-way road and improve sidewalks and drainage. That isn’t expected to be done until early next year.
Another concept — Select Start Arcade & Bar — has closed in Deep Ellum but is planning to open in the Upper Greenville area next month, according to The Dallas Morning News.
