Dear readers,
It’s so nice to finally introduce myself to you all as your new Lake Highlands editor.
I was born and raised in Pleasant Grove, where the streets around Lake June Road, Buckner Boulevard and Prairie Creek Road were filled with the thump of reggaeton from car stereos, paleteros and eloteros making their rounds, and bumper-to-bumper traffic.
I spent a lot of my early childhood following my grandmother, Maria, around as she cleaned beautiful houses. As she drove up and down Audelia Road and Walnut Hill, I didn’t realize I was in Lake Highlands.
Now, as the Lake Highlands editor, it’s been a surreal and humbling experience for me to look back and see how far I’ve come. I went to elementary school in South Dallas, then to Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center. I started college at the University of Notre Dame, but found myself coming back home to attend and graduate from Southern Methodist University.
This month, the magazine is focused on education and what better month to introduce myself to you than this one. Education has always played a vital role in my life: my mom, Sandra, is the lead counselor at Sunset High School in Dallas ISD, and I plan on going back to school to obtain my Ph.D. in English.
I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a bit about me. I am always available for a coffee chat and to talk about what you think needs to be highlighted in our neighborhood.
