The Granada Theater and Sundown at Granada is closing after decades on Greenville Avenue and is expected to be succeeded by a concept called Bathhouse.

“Granada brought people together for the music while Sundown gave them a place to gather over food, drinks and friendship,” reads a statement on social media from owners Mike Schoder and Julia Garton. “Bathhouse will bring people together through wellness, relaxation and connection. Different experiences but the same spirit of community.”

Shows and events at Granada will be hosted through April 17, and Sundown’s last day of service will be Nov. 1, though private events will continue through the end of the year, according to the statement.

“For 22 years at Granada and 15 years at Sundown, we’ve poured our hearts into these places, the music, the people and the thousands of unforgettable nights and memories made within their walls,” the statement reads. “Walking away isn’t easy. But sometimes knowing when to turn the page is as important as knowing when to start the story.”

“Rising costs, shifting audiences and corporate consolidation” were cited as challenges for independent venues. The decision to sell was also a personal one, as the owners reflected on the passing of time.

“At 58, having lost far too many friends in their 40s and 50s, in the music business, I’ve started thinking differently about time,” Schoder wrote. “How quickly it passes, how much of life we devote to our work and how important it is to appreciate the people and experiences that matter most in the end.”

The statement closed with gratitude for employees, artists, neighbors and everyone who has supported Granada and Sundown over the years, plus a reminder to “always remember to love yourself.”
