A blue wave hit Texas on Election Day, ending more than 30 years of Republican control in Texas.

What was expected to be a long night of election results in the Texas governor’s race ended when Republican Gov. Greg Abbott conceded to Democratic State Rep. Gina Hinojosa. Hinojosa’s victory makes her the first Latina governor of Texas.

Meanwhile, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who held his election watch party at the Westin Galleria Dallas, lost his bid for U.S. Senate to Democratic State Rep. James Talarico, a former public school teacher and seminary student.

Here’s a breakdown of the results for districts representing Lake Highlands and surrounding communities:

Texas House:

  • District 102: Democrat incumbent Ana-Maria Rodríguez Ramos defeated Republican Bonnie Abadie, according to the Associated Press. Rodríguez Ramos has represented the district since 2019.
  • District 108: Republican incumbent Morgan Meyer won reelection against Democrat Allison Mitchell, according to the Associated Press. Meyer has represented the district since 2015.

Texas Senate:

  • District 16: Democrat Nathan Johnson ran for Texas attorney general rather than seeking another Senate term. Johnson defeated Republican Mayes Middleton in the attorney general’s race. His departure from the Senate will leave the District 16 seat vacant, and a special election will be held to fill the remainder of his term, which was scheduled to end in 2029. District 16 covers parts of Lake Highlands, Richardson and East Dallas.

U.S. House:

  • District 32: Republican Jace Yarbrough leads Democrat Dan Barrios as the race has not yet been called, with 51.5% and 48.5% of the vote, respectively, according to the Associated Press.

How did Lake Highlands precincts vote?

While statewide results showed a major shift in Texas politics, precinct-level results offer a closer look at how Lake Highlands residents voted in the Nov. 3 election, according to the Dallas County General and Joint Election Unofficial Cumulative Results.

In Texas House District 108, seven of the 12 Lake Highlands precincts favored Meyer, while the remaining five favored Mitchell.

The precincts favoring Mitchell were concentrated near U.S. 75, the L Streets, Lakeridge Shopping Center and White Rock Creek Greenbelt. Precincts favoring Meyer included areas near Harry S. Moss Park, Lake Highlands High School and White Rock Elementary School.

In Texas House District 102, all seven Lake Highlands precincts favored Democrat Ana-Maria Rodríguez Ramos. These precincts cover areas surrounding Northwood Heights, Hamilton Park, Town Creek and east of Interstate 635.

In the attorney general’s race, Lake Highlands precincts heavily favored Johnson. Only three precincts favored Middleton, with those votes coming from areas north and south of Lake Highlands High School and near White Rock Elementary School.

In the U.S. House District 32 race, none of the six Lake Highlands precincts favored Republican Jace Yarbrough. The six precincts favored Democrat Dan Barrios and are located in the Forest Meadow, Moss Farm, Hamilton Park, Northwood Heights and Town Creek areas.
