The Oak Cliff Cultural Center presents Forget Me Not, an exhibit set to open from Aug. 8 to Sept. 18.
Featuring work from artists in the spring 2024 Flower Shop Artist Residency cohort, the exhibit examines the preservation of memories around love, self-exploration and grief toward collective healing after living and cross-pollinating on the border town of Brownsville, Texas.
“In this exhibition each artist explores how personal history informs our lives, how we navigate the world, and the art we create,” reads a press release from the Oak Cliff Cultural Center. “With a focus on representations of the body, Sam Rawls explores the impact of societal standards and family dynamics on self-worth while the exaggerated expression and gesture in Sarah Reagan’s carved busts collapse of binaries between high art and play, “perfection” and improvisation. Through cyanotypes, textiles, and photography, Cecilia Sierra and Cielo Zuñiga commemorate loved ones and growing up in international generational homes, engaging physically and emotionally in an act of remembrance and resistance. Sue Montoya and Jesus Treviño explore ideas around protection, literal and spiritual, to explore ideas around constant processes and mending through meditative processes that speak to healing.”
With pieces in a variety of mediums, such as photography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, textiles and animation, each piece explores keeping love and memories alive through remembrance, healing, placemaking, re-building and nostalgia.
The exhibit will open with an artist talk on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
To visit the Forget Me Not beyond opening day, the Oak Cliff Cultural Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.
