Some of the most memorable lessons don’t happen behind a desk.

They happen when a student sees an animal up close, walks a nature trail, experiments with wind turbines, or watches something they learned in a textbook come to life right in front of them.

These experiences are an important part of a well-rounded education. That is why I am excited about Learning Voyages, a program that gives Dallas ISD students access to hands-on, STEM-focused learning experiences beyond the classroom.

Through a partnership with Lyda Hill Philanthropies and the Dallas Education Foundation, students are visiting some of our city’s leading educational destinations, including the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the Dallas Zoo, and Dallas ISD’s own Environmental Education Center.

Transportation, admission, and program coordination are covered, helping remove barriers that can make experiences like these difficult for schools and families to access.

These are much more than field trips. Learning Voyages are intentionally connected to what students are learning in the classroom, giving them opportunities to explore STEM concepts through hands-on experiences.

For our students in District 3, opportunities like these extend learning beyond the walls of their schools and give them access to some of the incredible educational resources available across our city. Our students deserve opportunities to explore, discover, and connect what they learn in the classroom to the world around them.

The opportunity for families to make discoveries of their own is just around the corner with Discover Dallas ISD. Families will have the opportunity to explore all the learning experiences available to their children at this event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Fair Park. You can meet school representatives, learn about unique learning experiences for your children, participate in interactive activities, and get help applying to the district’s special schools and programs for the 2027-2028 school year.

I am proud that Dallas ISD continues to open the doors to discovery for our students and families whether through learning voyages or events where they can explore their future.
