The death penalty is currently off the table for the man accused of murdering a motel manager by decapitation last September.
Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, 37, was previously indicted of capital murder in the death of 50-year-old Chandra Mouli “Bob” Nagamallaiah at Downtown Suites in the 3400 block of Samuell Boulevard. The Cuban migrant and motel employee allegedly attacked Nagamallaiah with a machete after an argument about a broken washing machine, and Cobos-Martinez was upset that the manager was using a translator instead of speaking with him directly, according to The Dallas Morning News.
During the attack, Cobos-Martinez was also allegedly robbing or attempting to rob Nagamallaiah, WFAA reports.
Generally, capital murders are punishable as capital felonies, in which case the convicted person who committed the crime as an adult would be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole. The Dallas Morning News reported that Dallas County Criminal District Attorney John Creuzot sent a notice of intent to the county court that said Texas wouldn’t seek the death penalty in this case.
Almost half a million dollars were raised on GoFundMe for Nagamallaiah’s family following his death. Donations are currently paused.
