The Richardson Independent School District welcomed new families with its first New Family Welcome Tour on Monday, Aug. 3, visiting households across North Texas ahead of the start of the 2026-27 school year.
Superintendent Tabitha Branum, members of the Board of Trustees and district leaders visited families who recently enrolled in RISD through the district’s open enrollment program.
RISD’s open enrollment brought in about 250 students from outside district boundaries. Leaders visited families in Dallas, Farmers Branch, Addison, McKinney, Garland, Forney and Mesquite.
The district expanded its open enrollment program to attract students from a broader area of North Texas. With more than 30,000 students enrolled across its campuses, Branum said the district has room to welcome additional families.
“We want to make sure that we have an opportunity to fill every one of our seats, and this is one of those strategies that we are using to do that,” Branum said in an interview with CBS News Texas.
The welcome tour was designed to help new families feel connected and excited before the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
