Kathryn Lacy Mitchell celebrated her 105th birthday Wednesday, July 1 surrounded by family, friends and community leaders at the WellMed Senior Activity Center.

Mitchell is a retired Dallas ISD educator and an active participant at the center where she attends activities and programs five days a week.

“I’m so proud of this center, I don’t know what to do,” Mitchell said.

Birthday celebrations included an African dance, hearing from local church leaders, a song from the sisters of Mitchell’s alumni chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and words shared by close friends and family members to the over 100 people in attendance.

Mitchell shared with attendees that the program was dedicated to her dear friend Barbara Record and Record’s family.

“Ms.Kathryn is an inspiration to us all on healthy aging,” said Daryl Quarles, regional manager of the center. “This is not just a celebration of her birthday. It’s the celebration of all the great years that she has been with us. Every smile is a fine victory. We celebrate our wisdom and her grace. Ms.Kathyrn’s existence has been a true blessing and an inspiration to everyone around her.”

As for how she made it to 105, she does not take the responsibility.

“I don’t get this credit. I give this credit to God,” Mitchell said. “I know if it had not been for God, I would not be 105.”
