A U.S. district judge sentenced 23-year-old Travion Williams, identified as a Four Deuce Oakland Crip gang member, to 90 months (7 and a half years) in federal prison for taking part in an armed carjacking in Deep Ellum in 2023.
Williams previously pleaded guilty to the carjacking and “possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence” last year, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas.
The carjacking took place near Elm Street when Williams, wielding a Glock 19 pistol, and two others approached two people who were returning to their parked car (a 2020 Chevrolet Corvette) and forcibly took keys, a wallet, a phone and other things. Williams and the others took off in the car and initially evaded Dallas police officers using high speed. After Williams abandoned the car under a bridge, he was caught on foot by police.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Dallas worked with Dallas Police Department in investigating this case, as it falls under its initiative to “identify and disrupt gang members operating along the Malcolm X Boulevard corridor in South Dallas,” according to the press release.
“This sentence sends a clear message to violent gang members: if you choose to use firearms to terrorize our communities and commit violent crimes, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and our law enforcement partners will come after you,” said Brian Garner, ATF Dallas Special Agent in Charge, in the press release. “Through Operation Blue Laces, ATF and our partners will continue dismantling violent gang activity and holding those who threaten our communities accountable.”
