Attention Lakewood Country Club members — your golf course is coming back.
The country club is hosting a celebration for the “reopening of our beautifully reimagined golf course” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.
Since last fall, the full course has undergone a rebuild led by Andrew Green, who is well-known for such renovations, to complement a new practice facility, teaching studio and on-course comfort station, according to this job listing, and modernize the course and practice facilities, according to Sounded Good, which ranks golf courses in Dallas-Fort Worth.
“An underground parking structure will add greenspace and acreage — much needed for this land-locked property. We anticipate the course to really shine once the overhaul is complete,” Sounded Good writes.
You may remember the renovation caused the club to cancel this year’s Fourth of July fireworks show (which is expected to return).
Lakewood Country Club was founded in 1912 at Gaston Avenue and Abrams Road and was Dallas’s second 18-hole golf course, according to its website. The famed Byron Nelson won a tournament title there when the club hosted the Dallas Victory Open (which became the Byron Nelson Classic) in 1944.
And fun fact, according to a previous Lakewood/East Dallas Advocate post: “When hard times hit during the Depression, the club kept itself afloat by installing slot machines in the men’s locker rooms.”
The invitation to the reopening celebration promises that members will receive more details about the event.
